The FAA requires at least 40 hours flight time to attain your private pilot license. The national average is over 60. There is also ground time, and pre- and post-flight discussions. Many schools will give you an estimate based on the minimum flying time. Although the estimate I list below is based on the national average, I have had many students complete their training in fewer hours, and some take longer. Flight instruction is an individual endeavor. This is an approximate breakdown of the costs to become a private pilot:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| 60 hours Cessna 152 (dual/solo) | $4500. |
| 40 hours Dual Instruction | 1600. |
| Misc Pre- and Post-flight Instruction | 225. |
| Books and Other Materials | 250. |
| Ground School | 250. |
| Written Test | 70. |
| Practical Test (checkride) | 350. |
| Total | $7245. |
